Workout Description
For Time
10 Strict Presses (115/85 lb)
15 Overhead Squats (115/85 lb)
20 Push Presses (115/85 lb)
25 Front Squats (115/85 lb)
30 Push Jerks (115/85 lb)
35 Back Squats (115/85 lb)
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This 135-rep barbell complex at 115/85 lb is brutal due to cumulative fatigue and movement sequencing. Strict presses and overhead squats demand shoulder stability when fresh, but as fatigue builds, the push presses, front squats, push jerks, and back squats (35 reps!) compound the damage. The load is moderate but the continuous barbell work, ascending rep scheme, and shoulder/leg interference across all six movements will crush most average athletes.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (8/10): 135 total barbell reps across six movements heavily taxes muscular endurance, particularly shoulders, quads, and posterior chain. The cumulative fatigue from strict press through back squat creates significant stamina demands.
- Flexibility (7/10): Overhead squats demand significant shoulder, thoracic, and ankle mobility. Front squats require wrist and hip flexibility. This workout has among the highest mobility demands of any barbell complex.
- Strength (6/10): 115/85 lb is a moderate-to-heavy load, especially for strict press and overhead squat. Strict pressing and overhead squatting at this weight requires genuine strength, not just endurance.
- Endurance (5/10): 135 total reps for time with a barbell creates moderate cardiovascular demand. The ascending rep scheme and heavier loads force rest breaks, limiting sustained aerobic output but still taxing the system.
- Power (5/10): Push presses and push jerks require explosive hip drive and power generation. However, strict presses and squats are grind movements, creating a balanced mix of power and strength demands.
- Speed (4/10): For-time format incentivizes efficient bar cycling and quick transitions, but heavy loads and fatigue naturally slow the pace. Steady, controlled pacing dominates over sprint cycling.

Scaling Options
Weight: Scale to 95/65 lb if you can complete 10 unbroken strict presses and 10 unbroken overhead squats at Rx weight when fresh. Drop to 75/55 lb for athletes still developing overhead stability or squat mechanics. Movement substitutions: Replace overhead squats with goblet squats (same reps) if shoulder mobility prevents a safe overhead position. Replace strict press with a dumbbell strict press if barbell overhead mechanics are compromised. Volume: Reduce the rep scheme to 8-12-16-20-24-28 (roughly 65% volume) for athletes newer to high-rep barbell cycling. Alternatively, cap the workout at 20 minutes and record completed reps.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the weight if you cannot perform at least 8 unbroken overhead squats or 8 unbroken strict presses at Rx load when fully rested — fatigue will only make those numbers worse mid-workout. Scale the overhead squat movement entirely if you lack the shoulder mobility and thoracic control to maintain a safe overhead position, as 15 reps of a compromised OHS under fatigue is a recipe for injury. The goal is to keep the barbell moving with short, intentional breaks rather than long forced rests or failed reps. Technique always wins over load in this workout — a lighter barbell that moves consistently will deliver far more training stimulus than a heavy barbell that pins you to the floor. Target completion time is 15-22 minutes; if your estimated time exceeds 25 minutes at Rx, scale the load or volume.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-to-long time domain grind lasting 15-25 minutes for most athletes. The ascending rep scheme combined with a single barbell load creates a relentless full-body strength-endurance challenge. The workout progresses from the most technically demanding movements (strict press, OHS) at lower reps to higher-volume movements that are more forgiving mechanically. Expect your shoulders, legs, and lungs to all be screaming by the back squat set. The primary challenge is mental and muscular endurance — managing fatigue across 135 total reps while keeping the barbell moving and technique intact.
Coach Insight
The golden rule here: do NOT go out too hot on the strict press. Those 10 reps feel easy fresh, but your shoulders are the limiting factor for everything that follows. Break the strict press into 6-4 or 5-5 if needed — do not fail a rep. On the overhead squats, prioritize a wide grip and active shoulders; fatigue will want to collapse your torso forward. The push press is your first real opportunity to use leg drive — use it aggressively and save your shoulders. Front squats at 25 reps will be the mental wall for most athletes; break these into sets of 8-7-5-5 and breathe at the top. Push jerks at 30 reps should be done in quick sets of 5-6 with short rests — the dip-drive rhythm is your friend here. The back squats at 35 reps are actually your best chance to finish strong since the load is most mechanically efficient in this position; aim for sets of 10 with controlled rest. Transitions between movements are free rest — use them wisely but don't linger. Keep the barbell loaded throughout; there is no stripping weight.
Benchmark Notes
135 reps at 115/85 lb climbing from 10 strict presses to 35 back squats, all on one bar. The strict presses and overhead squats are hardest early; the push jerks and back squats are about volume. L5 (12:30-16 min) breaks the presses into sets of 3-4. L10 (under 5 min) keeps every movement in one or two sets.
Modality Profile
All 6 movements (Shoulder Press, Overhead Squat, Push Press, Front Squat, Push Jerk, Back Squat) are barbell weightlifting movements with external load. No gymnastics or monostructural movements present.
