Workout Description
3 Rounds for Time
1 Bear Complex (185/135 lb)
7 Bar Facing Burpees
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
The Bear Complex (power clean → front squat → push press → back squat → push press) at 185/135 lb is already a significant technical and strength challenge. Completing even 1 rep at that load requires near-maximal effort for most athletes. Three rounds with bar-facing burpees means returning to a heavy, complex barbell while fatigued. Multiple limiting factors hit simultaneously: grip, overhead strength, technique under fatigue, and cardiovascular demand.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Strength (8/10): 185/135 lb Bear Complex is a significant load requiring near-maximal strength output for most athletes. Each complex demands repeated heavy power cleans, front squats, push presses, and back squats.
- Power (8/10): The Bear Complex demands repeated explosive hip extension through power cleans and push presses at heavy loads. Burpees add a plyometric jump element, making power a primary training stimulus.
- Flexibility (6/10): The Bear Complex requires thoracic mobility for overhead positions, hip flexibility for front rack and squat depth, and shoulder mobility for the push press lockout across multiple movement transitions.
- Stamina (5/10): The Bear Complex chains 5 movements per rep, taxing grip and posterior chain across 3 rounds. Burpees add cumulative fatigue, but total volume remains moderate rather than high.
- Endurance (4/10): Only 3 rounds with relatively low rep counts limits sustained cardiovascular demand. The heavy Bear Complex requires rest between efforts, keeping heart rate elevated but not in a true aerobic endurance zone.
- Speed (3/10): Heavy loading on the Bear Complex forces deliberate, controlled pacing with necessary rest. Speed is secondary to technique and strength; athletes cannot cycle the barbell quickly at these loads.

Scaling Options
Weight: Scale to 135/95 lb for intermediate athletes, 95/65 lb for newer athletes, or use a load you can cycle for 5+ unbroken reps with solid technique. Movement substitution: If the Bear Complex is too complex technically, substitute a Power Clean + Thruster (7 reps) to simplify the movement pattern while keeping the stimulus. Bar-facing burpees can be scaled to regular burpees or step-over burpees for athletes with mobility or coordination limitations. Volume: Reduce to 2 rounds if the athlete is newer or if the weight is still challenging at a scaled load. Alternatively, reduce the Bear Complex to 5 reps per round instead of 7 to keep the time domain appropriate.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the weight if you cannot perform at least 5 unbroken Bear Complex reps at the prescribed load with sound mechanics — this is non-negotiable for safety, as a fatigued Bear Complex with poor form puts the lower back and shoulders at serious risk. Prioritize technique over load every time here. The goal is to finish each round of the Bear Complex without setting the bar down mid-complex, so choose a weight that makes that achievable but challenging. Athletes should be targeting a total time of 6-12 minutes — if you're projected to go beyond 15 minutes, reduce the load or volume. If you're brand new to the Bear Complex, spend time drilling the movement pattern before attempting it in a timed workout, regardless of the weight.
Intended Stimulus
Short to moderate sprint effort lasting 5-12 minutes for most athletes. This workout demands short burst power and raw strength endurance — the Bear Complex is a full-body barbell cycling challenge that taxes every major muscle group, while the burpees serve as active recovery that isn't really recovery at all. The primary challenge is strength and mental toughness: completing a technically demanding barbell complex under fatigue while resisting the urge to drop the bar. Expect your grip, posterior chain, and lungs to all be screaming by round 3.
Coach Insight
The Bear Complex (power clean → front squat → push press → back squat → push press, repeated 7 times without setting the bar down) is the centerpiece — treat it with respect. Your pacing strategy should be to move deliberately through each Bear Complex, finding a rhythm rather than rushing. A smooth, controlled tempo on the complex will save your grip and shoulders far more than trying to sprint through it. On the burpees, move at a consistent, honest pace — don't sandbag them, but don't blow up your heart rate before the next complex either. Key technique cues: keep your elbows high in the front rack, use your hips to drive the push press rather than grinding with your arms, and stay tight through the back squat to protect your spine under fatigue. Common mistakes include letting the bar drift away from the body during the power clean, collapsing the elbows in the front squat, and rushing the transitions between movements causing sloppy reps. For the burpees, stay low and efficient — step up if needed, but get over the bar cleanly. The biggest mistake athletes make is going too hard on round 1 of the complex and having nothing left for rounds 2 and 3.
Benchmark Notes
Three rounds of one bear complex at 185/135 lb (power clean, front squat, push press, back squat, push press) and 7 bar-facing burpees. 185 lb is near an average athlete's push-press max. L5 (4:10-5 min) takes about 85 seconds a round. L10 (under 2:15) holds about 35 seconds a round.
