Workout Description
2 Rounds for Time
30 Cleans (135/95 lb)
30 Wall Ball Shots (20/14 lb)
30 Shoulder-to-Overheads (135/95 lb)
30 Burpees
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This workout combines 240 total reps across 2 rounds with no built-in rest. The 135/95 lb cleans and shoulder-to-overheads are heavy barbell cycling movements that compound fatigue on the same muscle groups, separated only by wall balls and burpees that keep the heart rate elevated. By round 2, grip, shoulders, and lungs are all simultaneously limiting factors, pushing this well beyond Hard into Very Hard territory.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): 240 total reps across two rounds demands exceptional muscular endurance. Grip, shoulders, legs, and lungs are all taxed repeatedly, making this a premier test of sustained muscular output under fatigue.
- Endurance (7/10): Two rounds of 120 total reps across four movements creates sustained cardiovascular demand. The combination of barbell work, wall balls, and burpees keeps heart rate elevated throughout, testing aerobic capacity significantly.
- Power (6/10): Cleans are inherently explosive, and wall ball shots require hip drive and power transfer. Burpees add repeated explosive hip extension. Power output degrades significantly under fatigue across 240 total reps.
- Speed (6/10): For-time format incentivizes fast cycling and efficient transitions between movements. Managing bar cycling speed on cleans and shoulder-to-overheads while maintaining burpee pace is critical to a competitive finish time.
- Strength (5/10): 135/95 lb cleans and shoulder-to-overheads represent moderate loads that challenge strength endurance rather than maximal force production. Fatigue accumulation across 60 barbell reps per round makes each rep harder.
- Flexibility (4/10): Cleans require hip mobility and a solid front rack position. Shoulder-to-overheads demand overhead stability. Wall balls need adequate squat depth. Moderate mobility demands across multiple movement patterns throughout the workout.

Scaling Options
Weight: Reduce cleans and shoulder-to-overhead to 95/65 lb for intermediate athletes, or 75/55 lb for newer athletes. Wall ball: drop to 14/10 lb or reduce target height. Volume: Reduce to 20 reps per movement per round, or complete just 1 round for newer athletes still building capacity. Movement substitutions: Sub dumbbell hang cleans (35/25 lb) for barbell cleans if technique is a concern. Sub push press with dumbbells for shoulder-to-overhead. Sub step-back burpees for standard burpees to reduce impact and slow the heart rate spike. For athletes with shoulder limitations, sub front squats for cleans and dumbbell push press for shoulder-to-overhead.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the weight if you cannot perform at least 10 unbroken cleans or 8 unbroken shoulder-to-overheads at the Rx load when fresh — under fatigue, those numbers will drop significantly and form will break down, creating injury risk. Scale the volume if you are newer to CrossFit or if your estimated finish time exceeds 40 minutes — the stimulus is a sustained hard effort, not an endurance slog. Prioritize movement quality over Rx weight every time, especially on the cleans where a rounded back under fatigue is a real danger. The target time window is 20-35 minutes. If you're consistently finishing under 20 minutes, consider adding weight or reps. If you're over 35 minutes, reduce volume or load. Intensity and consistent movement are the priority — scaling is not a weakness, it's smart coaching.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-to-long grind lasting roughly 20-35 minutes for most athletes. The workout demands a hard, sustained effort across two rounds of high-volume barbell and bodyweight work. The primary challenge is mental and conditioning-based — the sheer volume of 240 total reps will test your ability to stay composed, keep moving, and manage fatigue across four very different movement patterns. Expect your lungs and legs to be on fire by the second round of burpees. The goal is to build aerobic capacity under load and develop mental toughness when the body wants to stop.
Coach Insight
The biggest mistake athletes make here is going out too hot on the cleans in round one. Treat round one like it's round two — conservative, controlled, and deliberate. For the 30 cleans, break them into sets of 5-7 from the start, resting 10-15 seconds between sets. Power cleans are preferred over squat cleans to save your legs for the burpees. On wall balls, aim for sets of 10-15 early and drop to 5-8 in round two — unbroken sets here will cost you dearly later. For shoulder-to-overhead, push press is your friend; avoid jerking unless you're very efficient at it. Break these into 5s and 6s — do not go to failure on the barbell. Burpees are your reset — find a slow, steady pace and never stop moving. Transitions between movements should be quick but not frantic. In round two, expect everything to feel 30% harder — that's normal. The athlete who paces round one intelligently will pass everyone in round two.
Benchmark Notes
Two rounds of 30 cleans, 30 wall balls, 30 shoulder-to-overheads at 135/95 lb and 30 burpees. L5 (21-24:30) breaks the barbell into sets of 5-8 and takes about 12 minutes a round. L10 (under 12 min) holds about 5 minutes a round with big sets.
Modality Profile
4 movements total: Clean (W), Wall Ball (W), Shoulder-to-Overhead (W), Burpee (G). That's 3 Weightlifting and 1 Gymnastics, no Monostructural. 3/4 = 75% W, 1/4 = 25% G.
