Why This Workout Is Extremely Hard
This workout combines multiple brutal elements sequentially with no recovery built in. The 315/205 lb burpee deadlifts are near-maximal for most athletes. Then 41 strict pull-ups AND 41 strict toes-to-bars absolutely destroy grip and core. Devil presses bookend the workout with heavy dumbbells, the box step-ups add loaded leg fatigue, and a 2,004m run closes it out. Cumulative grip failure, muscular exhaustion, and sheer volume make this elite-only.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): Massive volume across 41 strict pull-ups, 41 strict toes-to-bars, multiple devil press sets, and burpee variations creates extreme muscular endurance demands on grip, core, shoulders, and posterior chain.
- Endurance (8/10): The 2,004 meter run combined with high-rep burpee variations and continuous movement creates significant cardiovascular demand sustained over a lengthy for-time effort requiring aerobic capacity throughout.
- Strength (6/10): The 315/205 lb burpee-to-deadlift is a heavy strength demand, and strict pull-ups require significant relative strength. Devil presses at 50/35 lb dumbbells add moderate loading throughout.
- Flexibility (5/10): Strict toes-to-bars require hamstring and hip flexor mobility, deadlifts demand posterior chain flexibility, and devil presses require shoulder range of motion under fatigue.
- Power (5/10): Devil presses and burpee box step-ups involve explosive hip extension and dumbbell swing components, though the heavy deadlift and high-rep nature moderate pure power expression.
- Speed (5/10): For-time format incentivizes efficient transitions and cycling, but the heavy deadlift load and strict gymnastics movements demand controlled pacing rather than sprint-style cycling throughout.

Scaling Options
Devil Presses: Scale to 35/20 lb dumbbells or reduce to 6 and 8 reps respectively. Burpee to Deadlift: Scale load to 225/155 lb or 185/125 lb; reduce to 5 reps if needed. Strict Pull-Ups: Scale to 25-30 reps with a band, or substitute ring rows (41 reps); athletes with fewer than 5 strict pull-ups should use a band or ring rows. Strict Toes-to-Bars: Scale to strict knees-to-chest or lying leg raises (41 reps); reduce volume to 25-30 reps if midline fatigue is a concern. Dumbbell Burpee Box Step-Ups: Scale to 35/20 lb dumbbells, reduce box height to 20/16 in, or reduce to 12 reps. Run: Scale to 1,600m or substitute 2,004m on a rower or bike (approximately 2,200m row or 4,000m bike).
Scaling Explanation
Athletes should scale if they cannot perform at least 5 strict pull-ups unbroken, cannot safely deadlift 315/205 lb with proper bracing, or if the projected time exceeds 70 minutes — the workout loses its stimulus beyond that point. Prioritize technique over load on the deadlift above all else; a fatigued, rounded-back deadlift at heavy weight is a serious injury risk. If strict pull-ups or strict TTB are limiting factors, scale volume or movement before scaling the run or devil press weight — the upper body pulling volume is central to the workout's intent. The goal is to finish feeling like you left everything on the floor, not to DNF or get injured. Athletes newer to CrossFit should scale to 60-70% of all loads and reduce strict pulling volume by 30-40% to keep the workout within a 45-55 minute window.
Intended Stimulus
This is a long, grinding hero-style effort likely themed around a significant date (2004) — expect a 35-60+ minute time domain for most athletes. The stimulus is a sustained, full-body engine test that demands both raw strength and aerobic capacity. The primary challenge is mental: the workout is deliberately long and heavy, combining upper body pulling volume (41 strict pull-ups, 41 strict toes-to-bars) with loaded burpee movements and a nearly 1.25-mile run to close it out. Athletes should expect to feel fatigued before the run even starts — that's intentional. This is about grit, pacing, and managing fatigue across multiple demanding movement patterns.
Coach Insight
Treat this like a long chipper — work from the top with controlled urgency, not a sprint. On the opening 10 Devil Presses, find a smooth, rhythmic pace and avoid going to failure; you have 11 more coming later. The 7 Burpee to Deadlifts at 315/205 lb are deceptively taxing — reset your grip and brace hard every single rep, do not rush the setup off the floor. The 41 strict pull-ups are the biggest potential time sink: break these early and often (sets of 5-7) rather than grinding to failure and needing long rests. Same logic applies to the 41 strict toes-to-bars — strict TTB are a serious midline demand, so plan sets of 5-8 and rest 10-15 seconds between sets proactively. The second round of Devil Presses (11 reps) will feel much harder than the first — stay patient and breathe at the top of each rep. The Dumbbell Burpee Box Step-Ups are a quad and hip flexor burner; step up deliberately and use the step to recover your breathing. Save something for the 2,004m run — it's not a sprint, but don't jog it either. Aim for a controlled, honest pace you can sustain from the first 400m.
Benchmark Notes
A chipper: 10 devil presses (2x50/35 lb), 7 burpee deadlifts at 315/205 lb, 41 strict pull-ups, 41 strict toes-to-bars, 11 devil presses, 17 dumbbell burpee box step-ups and a 2,004 m run. The strict gymnastics are the limiter. L5 (29:30-34 min) does the strict pull-ups and toes-to-bars in sets of 3-5 and runs about 5:00 per kilometre. L10 (under 16:30) holds sets of 8-10 and runs near 3:30.
Modality Profile
