Workout Description
For Time — Descending Ladder (10-8-6-4-2):
Round 1: 10 reps each
Round 2: 8 reps each
Round 3: 6 reps each
Round 4: 4 reps each
Round 5: 2 reps each
Movements each round:
- Dumbbell Deadlift Burpees (2x20 kg — deadlift + burpee = 1 rep)
- Dumbbell Snatch (2x20 kg, alternating arms)
- Australian Pull-Ups (rings, feet elevated)
Rest 2:00 between rounds.
After completing all 5 rounds, perform a final Ascending Finisher:
5-10-15 reps of:
- Push-Ups
- Dumbbell Press (2x20 kg, strict)
No rest during the finisher. Total time cap: 30 minutes.
Why This Workout Is Hard
This workout combines moderate loads (20kg dumbbells) with significant volume and movement complexity. The descending ladder structure provides built-in recovery between rounds, but the dumbbell deadlift burpees are taxing early, creating grip and cardiovascular fatigue that compounds through the snatches and ring pull-ups. The ascending finisher adds 30 reps with no rest, hitting already-fatigued shoulders and chest. Most average athletes will complete this but experience substantial fatigue accumulation and pacing challenges.
Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (8/10): High total rep volume (90 reps in ladder + 30 in finisher) with complex movements requiring sustained muscular output across multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
- Endurance (7/10): Sustained cardiovascular demand across 30+ minutes of work with brief 2-minute recovery periods. The finisher eliminates rest, pushing aerobic capacity in final minutes.
- Power (7/10): Burpees, snatches, and ring pull-ups are inherently explosive movements. Descending reps allow faster cycling as fatigue accumulates, maintaining power output.
- Strength (6/10): Moderate dumbbell loads (20kg) demand force production, but descending rep scheme and bodyweight movements emphasize strength-endurance over maximal strength.
- Speed (6/10): Descending ladder format encourages faster movement as reps decrease. No rest during finisher demands quick transitions. Moderate pacing strategy required overall.
- Flexibility (5/10): Burpees, snatches, and pull-ups require moderate shoulder, hip, and thoracic mobility. Elevated ring pull-ups add demand but not extreme range needed.
