Workout Description
Perform as Many Repetitions as Possible For Points in 20 minutes
Overhead Squat (60/40 kg) (10 points)
Thruster (60/40 kg) (5 points)
Squat Clean (60/40 kg) (3 points)
Deadlift (60/40 kg) (1 point)
Why This Workout Is Hard
This 20-minute AMRAP uses a clever points system that incentivizes athletes to attempt heavier, more complex movements (OHS at 10pts vs deadlift at 1pt). The 60/40kg load is moderate-heavy, but overhead squats and thrusters demand significant skill and shoulder stability under fatigue. Athletes face constant decision-making about risk vs reward, and 20 minutes of continuous barbell work with technically demanding movements creates substantial cumulative fatigue.
Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (8/10): Continuous barbell work across four movements taxes posterior chain, legs, and shoulders repeatedly. High-rep accumulation over 20 minutes demands significant muscular endurance, especially as fatigue compounds across movement transitions.
- Flexibility (8/10): Overhead squats demand significant thoracic, shoulder, and ankle mobility. Squat cleans require hip flexibility and wrist positioning. This workout has among the highest mobility demands of any barbell combination.
- Power (7/10): Thrusters and squat cleans are inherently explosive movements requiring hip drive and bar acceleration. Even overhead squats demand positional power. The point system incentivizes prioritizing these higher-skill power movements.
- Endurance (7/10): A 20-minute AMRAP with barbell cycling creates sustained cardiovascular demand. Athletes must manage heart rate across multiple complex movements, making aerobic capacity a key limiter throughout the workout.
- Strength (6/10): 60/40 kg loads are moderate but meaningful across overhead squats, thrusters, and cleans. Athletes must produce force repeatedly under fatigue, blending strength endurance with absolute strength demands throughout.
- Speed (6/10): The points-based scoring rewards strategic movement selection over raw cycling speed. Athletes must balance transition efficiency and rep pacing, but pure sprint cycling is less critical than smart movement prioritization.

Scaling Options
Weight: Scale to 40/30 kg or 30/20 kg depending on athlete capacity. The overhead squat is the limiting movement — if an athlete cannot perform 5 unbroken overhead squats with good depth and stable overhead position, reduce load significantly or substitute goblet squats (5 points) for overhead squats. Thrusters can be substituted with dumbbell thrusters at equivalent effort. Squat cleans can be scaled to power cleans or dumbbell hang cleans. Deadlifts remain accessible for nearly all athletes — keep them in. For newer athletes, consider a simplified version: Dumbbell Thruster (5 pts), Goblet Squat (3 pts), Dumbbell Deadlift (1 pt), removing the overhead squat entirely to keep the workout safe and moving.
Scaling Explanation
Scale if you cannot perform at least 5 unbroken overhead squats with the Rx load in a fresh state — this movement under fatigue in a 20-minute window is a recipe for shoulder or lower back injury if the foundation isn't there. Prioritize technique over point accumulation; a clean set of thrusters scores more than a dangerous overhead squat. Athletes should be working hard but in control throughout — if you're grinding single reps with a rounded back or collapsing overhead position, step down a movement tier immediately. The goal is to keep moving with quality for the full 20 minutes. Newer athletes should aim to stay active and accumulate points steadily; experienced athletes should target maximizing overhead squat and thruster volume in the first 12 minutes before fatigue forces a shift to lower-tier movements.
Intended Stimulus
This is a 20-minute long-effort workout with a built-in strategic decision-making element. The point system creates a skill-and-strength tax — higher-value movements demand more technical proficiency and energy, while lower-value movements offer a recovery valve. The primary challenge is mental and strategic: athletes must constantly weigh fatigue against point efficiency. Expect a sustained, moderate-to-high effort across the full 20 minutes, similar to a long chipper with self-regulated intensity. The adaptation target is aerobic capacity under load combined with barbell cycling efficiency.
Coach Insight
The key to this workout is point-per-rep math versus your actual capacity. Overhead squats yield 10 points but are the most technically demanding and fatiguing — treat them like a premium currency. Thrusters at 5 points are your workhorse movement; they're hard but cyclable and should form the backbone of your strategy. Squat cleans at 3 points are a solid middle ground when thrusters feel too heavy. Deadlifts at 1 point are your active recovery — use them to shake out fatigue, not as a primary scoring tool. A smart athlete might open with 5-10 overhead squats, transition to thrusters in sets of 3-5, and drop to squat cleans or deadlifts when form degrades. Avoid going to failure on overhead squats early — a missed rep costs you time and energy with zero points. Keep transitions tight and deliberate. Common mistake: chasing overhead squats when fatigued and grinding through ugly reps that burn time. Know your threshold and step down a movement tier before technique collapses.
Benchmark Notes
The score is points in 20 minutes at 60/40 kg: 10 per overhead squat, 5 per thruster, 3 per squat clean and 1 per deadlift, so the best score comes from overhead squats. L5 (530-700) gets about 60 overhead squats in sets of 4-5. Elite athletes get 200+ (L10 is 2,000+).
Modality Profile
All 4 movements (Overhead Squat, Thruster, Squat Clean, Deadlift) involve an external load (barbell), making them all Weightlifting modality. 4/4 = 100% Weightlifting.
