Workout Description
EMOM for 20 minutes
1 Clean-and-Jerk (80% of 1 RM)
1 Clean (1 RM)
5 Burpee Box Jumps (24/20 in)
Why This Workout Is Extremely Hard
This EMOM demands a 1RM Clean every minute alongside 80% Clean-and-Jerk and 5 Burpee Box Jumps — three brutal elements combined with almost no rest. Maximal-effort singles require full CNS recovery, which this format denies entirely. Fatigue from burpee box jumps compounds barbell technique degradation at near-max loads. After 10+ minutes, completing a true 1RM Clean becomes nearly impossible for average athletes.
Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Strength (9/10): A clean-and-jerk at 80% and a clean at 1RM are near-maximal strength efforts. These are the primary stimulus, demanding significant force production from the entire body each minute.
- Power (9/10): All three movements are highly explosive. The clean, jerk, and burpee box jump each demand rapid force development and triple extension, making power the dominant physical quality throughout.
- Flexibility (7/10): The clean and jerk requires thoracic extension, hip mobility, ankle dorsiflexion, and a solid front rack position. These are demanding mobility requirements that limit performance if lacking.
- Endurance (5/10): A 20-minute EMOM creates a moderate cardiovascular demand. The structured rest within each minute prevents true aerobic redlining, but sustained effort over 20 rounds accumulates meaningful cardio stress.
- Stamina (4/10): Low rep counts per minute limit muscular endurance demands. However, repeating heavy cleans and burpee box jumps for 20 rounds creates cumulative fatigue in the posterior chain and legs.
- Speed (4/10): Athletes must complete movements efficiently within each minute to earn adequate rest. Transition speed between the three movements matters, but the heavy loads naturally limit cycling speed.

Scaling Options
Weight: Reduce the C&J to 70% of 1RM if 80% feels unmanageable under fatigue. For the 'clean at 1RM,' scale to 90% of 1RM or a heavy but consistent working weight — prioritize successful reps over failed attempts. Newer athletes should work at 75-80% of their clean 1RM for both movements. Movement substitutions: Replace the clean-and-jerk with a power clean + push press if the full squat clean or split jerk is not yet established. Sub burpee box jumps with burpee step-ups (same box height) or reduce box height to 20/16 inches. Volume: Reduce burpee box jumps to 3 reps per round if 5 reps consistently eats into rest time. Consider a 15-minute EMOM instead of 20 minutes for athletes newer to high-volume barbell cycling. Time: Keep the EMOM structure — it is the backbone of the workout's stimulus.
Scaling Explanation
Scale if you cannot complete the 80% C&J with solid technique, if your 1RM clean is not yet established with safe mechanics, or if 5 burpee box jumps leave you with zero rest between rounds. Technique must be the non-negotiable — a missed jerk or a sloppy clean under fatigue is a recipe for injury. Prioritize technique over load every time. The target experience is finishing each minute with 10+ seconds of rest, feeling challenged but in control. If an athlete is consistently missing the 1RM clean or failing the jerk, drop the load immediately — the stimulus is heavy barbell cycling, not max-effort failure training. Athletes who are newer to Olympic lifting should treat both barbell movements as heavy working sets rather than true max attempts, building confidence and bar awareness across the 20 minutes.
Intended Stimulus
This is a 20-minute moderate-to-long time domain EMOM that blends heavy barbell cycling with explosive conditioning. The stimulus is a sustained power output — not a sprint, not a grind, but a controlled high-intensity effort repeated every minute for 20 rounds. Each minute demands short burst power on the barbell followed by explosive athleticism on the burpee box jumps. The primary challenge is threefold: strength and skill on the heavy clean-and-jerk and max-effort clean, and conditioning as fatigue accumulates across 20 minutes. Athletes should feel challenged but never completely gassed — the goal is to maintain bar speed and movement quality from minute 1 through minute 20.
Coach Insight
The sequence matters here — you're going heaviest on the clean-and-jerk first (80%), then attempting your 1RM clean, then finishing with burpee box jumps. Treat the 80% C&J as a crisp, confident warm-up to the 1RM clean. On the jerk, commit to a full dip-drive and lock out overhead before stepping feet together — do not rush the catch. For the 1RM clean, reset mentally every minute. Pull the bar close, stay over it longer than you think, and be aggressive through the hips. The burpee box jumps are your conditioning tax — move steadily but don't sandbag them. Aim to finish all 5 burpee box jumps with at least 10-15 seconds of rest before the next minute begins. Common mistakes: rushing the 1RM clean setup after the C&J, losing tension in the pull, and stepping up on the box instead of jumping when fatigued. Jump every rep — stepping defeats the stimulus. Avoid going to absolute failure on the 1RM clean early in the workout; if you miss, reset to a heavy but makeable load for subsequent rounds.
Benchmark Notes
This EMOM prescribes fixed work each minute (1 C&J at 80% 1RM, 1 Clean at 1RM, 5 Burpee Box Jumps) with no cumulative score — athletes either complete each minute or fail/scale. The workout is a structured strength-conditioning piece with no rep count, load, or time metric to rank across athletes.
Modality Profile
3 movements total: Clean and Jerk (W), Clean (W), Burpee Box Jump (G - compound bodyweight movement). That's 2 Weightlifting and 1 Gymnastics, no Monostructural. 2/3 = ~67% W, 1/3 = ~33% G.
