Workout Description
For Time
75 Thrusters (75/45 lb)
Each minute on the minute perform:
10 Double-Unders
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
75 thrusters at 75/45 lb is already a brutal volume challenge (Fran is only 45 reps), but the mandatory EMOM double-unders force a pace and prevent strategic rest. Every minute, athletes must stop, complete 10 double-unders, then return to thrusters — disrupting rhythm, preventing recovery, and extending total time. The combination of high thruster volume, forced interruptions, and accumulated leg/shoulder fatigue pushes this well beyond Hard.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): 75 thrusters is an enormous volume of full-body muscular work. Legs, shoulders, and core must sustain repeated output under load, while calves and coordination are taxed by mandatory double-unders every minute.
- Endurance (7/10): The EMOM double-unders force continuous cardiovascular output throughout the workout. Managing heart rate across potentially 10+ minutes of combined thruster and jump rope work demands significant aerobic capacity.
- Power (6/10): Each thruster requires an explosive hip drive to transition from squat to overhead press. Maintaining power output across 75 reps while managing mandatory double-under interruptions is a significant challenge.
- Speed (6/10): The EMOM structure penalizes slow thruster cycling by consuming rest time with double-unders. Athletes must move efficiently through thrusters to minimize time lost to mandatory jump rope intervals each minute.
- Flexibility (5/10): Thrusters demand front rack mobility, thoracic extension, and hip flexibility through a full squat-to-overhead pattern. Double-unders require ankle and shoulder mobility, creating moderate overall flexibility demands.
- Strength (4/10): 75/45 lb thrusters are moderate loads that challenge muscular endurance more than maximal strength. The weight is light enough to cycle but heavy enough to accumulate significant fatigue over 75 reps.
Scaling Options
Weight: Scale to 65/35 lb if you cannot perform at least 10 unbroken thrusters at Rx weight when fresh. Further reduce to 45/35 lb for newer athletes. Volume: Reduce total thrusters to 50 or even 30 reps if the full 75 would take more than 20 minutes. Double-under substitutions: Sub 20 single-unders per minute, or 5 attempts at double-unders for athletes still learning the skill. For athletes with no jump rope proficiency, sub 10 box step-overs or 10 jumping jacks to maintain the interruption stimulus. Rep scheme modification: Consider 50 thrusters with the same EMOM structure to keep the workout under 15 minutes for intermediate athletes.
Scaling Explanation
Scale if you cannot perform at least 8-10 unbroken thrusters at the prescribed weight when fresh, or if double-unders take you more than 20-25 seconds to complete consistently. The intended stimulus requires you to be moving on thrusters for the majority of each minute — if the double-unders are eating up 40+ seconds, the workout loses its purpose. Prioritize intensity over Rx weight: a lighter load that keeps you moving and breathing hard is far more effective than grinding through heavy singles. Target completion time is 12-18 minutes for most athletes. If you're projected to go beyond 20 minutes, reduce volume or load. Technique always wins — a collapsing front rack or hyperextended lower back under fatigue is a sign to drop weight immediately.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-to-long grind lasting anywhere from 10 to 20+ minutes depending on fitness level. The EMOM double-under interruption is the defining feature — it forces you to repeatedly restart thrusters with a taxed respiratory system, simulating the mental and physical challenge of managing work under fatigue. The primary challenge is conditioning and mental toughness, with a secondary demand on leg and shoulder endurance. Expect a sustained hard effort that never fully lets you recover — this is not a sprint, but it should never feel comfortable either.
Coach Insight
The double-unders are the reset button, not a rest — treat them as a mandatory transition and get back to thrusters immediately after. Pacing strategy is everything here: start conservatively with sets of 5-8 thrusters, resisting the urge to go big early. As the minutes stack up, your rest window shrinks because the double-unders eat into your recovery time. Key technique cues: keep the thruster front rack tight with elbows high, use your hips to drive the bar overhead rather than pressing with your arms, and breathe at the top of each rep. For double-unders, stay relaxed in the shoulders and use a consistent wrist flick — rushing them leads to trips and wasted time. Common mistakes: going too big on early thruster sets and dying in the middle, letting the front rack collapse under fatigue, and panicking on double-under trips. Suggested rep scheme: aim for consistent sets of 5-7 thrusters per minute, leaving 15-20 seconds to complete your 10 double-unders before the next minute starts. If you're moving well, push to sets of 8-10 in the first few minutes, then settle into 5s as fatigue builds.
Benchmark Notes
75 thrusters at a light 75/45 lb, with 10 double-unders at the start of every minute. L5 (5:35-6:35) does about 15 thrusters a minute after the double-unders. L10 (under 3 min) does about 30 a minute.
Modality Profile
Two movements: Double-Unders (Gymnastics - jump rope bodyweight coordination) and Thruster (Weightlifting - barbell with external load). 1 Gymnastics + 1 Weightlifting = 50/50 split.
