Workout Description
For Time (with a Partner)
27 Power Snatches (70/50 kg)
5 Overhead Squats (100/70 kg)
11 Squat Snatches (80/60 kg)
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This partner workout combines three increasingly heavy snatch variations with significant technical demands. The 70/50kg power snatches (27 reps) tax grip and shoulders early, then 100/70kg overhead squats demand stability under fatigue, and 80/60kg squat snatches require peak technique when athletes are most compromised. Even split between partners, the loading progression and high skill requirements under cumulative fatigue push this firmly into Very Hard territory.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Flexibility (9/10): Squat snatches and overhead squats require exceptional hip, thoracic, and shoulder mobility. Athletes must achieve full overhead stability in a deep squat position, placing extreme demands on flexibility and joint range of motion.
- Power (9/10): Power snatches and squat snatches are quintessential explosive movements requiring rapid force production from the floor through full extension. Nearly every rep demands maximal hip and leg power output.
- Strength (8/10): Heavy loads dominate this workout — 100/70 kg overhead squats and 80/60 kg squat snatches demand significant maximal strength. These are near-maximal efforts for many athletes, making strength the primary limiter.
- Stamina (5/10): Moderate total rep count across three movements. Partner sharing reduces individual volume, but cumulative snatch and overhead squat reps still challenge muscular endurance of the posterior chain and shoulders.
- Endurance (3/10): A relatively short, heavy barbell workout with a partner sharing the load. Cardiovascular demand is moderate but not the primary stimulus; rest periods during partner transitions limit sustained aerobic output.
- Speed (3/10): Heavy loads and technical complexity limit bar cycling speed. Partner format allows recovery between efforts. Speed of transitions matters but is secondary to successfully completing each technically demanding, heavy lift.

Scaling Options
Weight reductions: Power Snatches scale to 50/35 kg, Overhead Squats to 70/50 kg, Squat Snatches to 60/40 kg. Movement substitutions: Replace Squat Snatches with Power Snatches at the same scaled load if full squat receiving position is not yet safe under fatigue. Replace Overhead Squats with front squats if overhead stability is a limiting factor. Volume modifications: Reduce Power Snatches to 18 reps, keep OHS at 5 (this is already low), and reduce Squat Snatches to 7 reps. For newer athletes, consider 15 Power Snatches, 5 OHS, and 7 Power Snatches as a simplified version that preserves the barbell-cycling stimulus without the squat snatch complexity.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the load if either partner cannot perform at least 5 unbroken Power Snatches at the prescribed weight with solid mechanics, or if the Overhead Squat weight cannot be held overhead with a stable, locked-out position for all 5 reps. Technique is non-negotiable here — snatching under fatigue with compromised mechanics is a high injury-risk scenario, particularly for the lower back and shoulders. Prioritize movement quality over Rx weight every time. The goal completion window is 10-18 minutes; if your team is projected to exceed 20 minutes, reduce load or volume. Scale the Squat Snatch to a Power Snatch if athletes lack the hip mobility or overhead strength to safely receive in the squat — preserving intensity and safety matters more than movement complexity on a given day.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-duration partner workout targeting 10-18 minutes of total work time. The stimulus is a hard, sustained effort demanding both raw strength and high-level barbell skill under fatigue. The three movements create a progressive loading challenge — starting with volume at moderate weight, hitting a heavy strength piece in the middle, then finishing with the most technically demanding movement at a moderate load. The primary challenge is skill and strength combined: athletes must maintain snatch mechanics as their shoulders, hips, and lungs accumulate fatigue. The partner format allows brief recovery windows, so expect each working set to be near-maximal effort.
Coach Insight
Divide the work strategically with your partner — you don't have to split reps evenly on every movement. Consider one partner owning the Power Snatches in larger sets (9-9-9 or 14-13) while the other rests, then swap roles on the Overhead Squats and Squat Snatches. The 5 Overhead Squats at 100/70 kg are the anchor of this workout — do NOT rush into them. Take an extra 10-15 seconds of rest before this barbell, set your overhead position firmly, and treat each rep with respect. A missed OHS here costs far more time than a short rest. On the Squat Snatches, singles or doubles are completely acceptable — these are heavy and technically demanding after accumulated fatigue. Prioritize a strong receiving position over speed. Key cues: keep the bar close on the pull, punch aggressively into the overhead lockout, and sit into the squat snatch with active shoulders. Common mistakes: rushing the OHS transition, catching squat snatches with soft elbows, and partners not communicating clearly on rep splits.
Benchmark Notes
Partner workout, shared: 27 power snatches at 70/50 kg, 5 overhead squats at 100/70 kg and 11 squat snatches at 80/60 kg. These loads are near or above an average athlete's max, so strength spreads the ladder wide. L5 (12:15-16:15) is slow heavy singles with misses. An elite team (under 4 min) cycles quick singles at about 65% of max.
Modality Profile
All three movements (Power Snatch, Overhead Squat, Squat Snatch) are barbell weightlifting movements involving external load. 3 out of 3 movements are Weightlifting = 100% W.
