Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This workout combines high volume (210 total burpees), continuous running (20x 400m = 5 miles), and sustained weight vest load (20/14 lbs). The structure forces repeated transitions between anaerobic running and explosive burpees with zero built-in recovery. Cumulative leg and cardiovascular fatigue intensifies as rep counts decrease but running repeats remain constant. Most average athletes will struggle with pacing and completion time (45-75 minutes), requiring significant mental toughness and aerobic capacity.
Benchmark Times for The Burpee Mile
- Elite: <18:30
- Advanced: 22:00-26:30
- Intermediate: 32:30-40:30
- Beginner: >105:00
Benchmark Notes
The primary limiters are cumulative burpee volume (210 reps total) under a weight vest combined with 21 x 400m runs (~8.4km total). L5 (~36 min) reflects a fit CrossFitter grinding through mid-sets with significant rest, managing vest fatigue and run pacing. Elite athletes maintain near-continuous movement on burpees and sub-2:00 runs throughout.
Modality Profile
Run is Monostructural (cyclical cardio). Burpee is Gymnastics (bodyweight movement). Two movements, one from each modality = 50/50 split.
