Workout Description
For Time
50 Thrusters (135/95 lb)
EMOM after one minute mark:
1 Burpee Box Jump (30/24 in)
Why This Workout Is Extremely Hard
This is essentially Kalsu with a box jump added to the burpee. 50 thrusters at 135/95 is already brutal, but the EMOM burpee box jump (30/24in) forces a mandatory pace that prevents recovery and compounds leg fatigue catastrophically. Thrusters and burpee box jumps share the same limiting muscles — quads, lungs, and shoulders — creating compounding interference. The forced EMOM pace eliminates any strategic rest, making this elite-level difficulty.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): 50 thrusters at 135/95 lb is an extreme muscular endurance challenge for legs, shoulders, and core. The compounding burpee box jumps add full-body fatigue that accumulates with every passing minute.
- Endurance (7/10): 50 heavy thrusters with mandatory burpee box jumps every minute creates sustained cardiovascular demand. The EMOM penalty forces continuous output, elevating heart rate throughout the entire workout duration.
- Power (7/10): Thrusters are inherently explosive, requiring a powerful hip drive to transfer force from squat to press. Burpee box jumps add plyometric demand, making power output a consistent requirement throughout.
- Strength (6/10): 135/95 lb thrusters represent a moderately heavy load requiring real strength to cycle repeatedly. Not a max-effort lift, but heavy enough that muscular fatigue becomes a limiting factor quickly.
- Speed (6/10): The EMOM penalty mechanic punishes slow thruster cycling directly. Athletes must move efficiently to minimize burpee interruptions, making quick transitions and fast cycling critical to workout performance.
- Flexibility (5/10): Thrusters demand overhead mobility, thoracic extension, and hip flexibility through a full squat-to-press. Burpee box jumps require hip flexor and ankle mobility for efficient movement patterns.
Scaling Options
Weight: Scale to 95/65 lb for intermediate athletes, or 75/55 lb for newer athletes — target a load you can cycle for sets of 5-7 without breaking form. Movement substitution: Replace burpee box jumps with burpee step-ups (same box height) or standard burpees to a target to reduce joint impact. Box height: Scale to 24/20 in or lower as needed. Volume: Reduce thrusters to 35 or 21 reps for athletes who would exceed 25 minutes at Rx. If the EMOM burpee box jump becomes overwhelming, cap the total burpee box jumps at 10-12 and continue thrusters after that point.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the weight if you cannot perform at least 7-10 unbroken thrusters at the prescribed load when fresh — this workout requires you to cycle the bar repeatedly under fatigue, and poor mechanics under load increases injury risk significantly. Scale the box height or substitute the jump if you have knee, ankle, or hip limitations, or if your landing mechanics break down when fatigued. The goal is to finish in the 12-20 minute window — if you're projected to go beyond 25 minutes, reduce reps or load to preserve the intended stimulus of a hard, sustained metabolic effort. Prioritize technique over Rx weight every time: a thruster with a collapsed rack or a missed depth squat is not a rep worth counting.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-to-long grind lasting anywhere from 10 to 25+ minutes depending on fitness level. The thruster load is heavy and unforgiving, demanding sustained muscular endurance and mental toughness. The EMOM burpee box jump acts as a built-in tax — every minute you're still working, you owe a rep that eats into your thruster time and recovery. The primary challenge is mental and metabolic: managing fatigue accumulation while staying disciplined with your pacing strategy. Expect your lungs and legs to be on fire simultaneously.
Coach Insight
The key to this workout is your first minute. Go out too hot on thrusters and you'll be paying burpee box jump debt while gasping for air — a death spiral. Aim to complete as many quality thrusters as possible in the first 60 seconds (a realistic target is 15-20 reps for strong athletes), then settle into a sustainable rhythm. After the one-minute mark, every time the clock hits a new minute, stop immediately and complete your burpee box jump before returning to thrusters — do not skip or delay it. For thrusters, keep the bar close, drive through the heels, and use your hip drive to push the bar overhead rather than pressing it out. Break early and often — sets of 5-7 are smarter than grinding to failure. For the burpee box jump, step up if needed to preserve legs; the goal is to minimize time away from the bar. Common mistakes: going unbroken too long on thrusters early, resting too long after burpee box jumps, and letting the front rack collapse under fatigue. Suggested rep scheme: 15-20 in minute one, then 5-7 reps per set with short 5-10 second breaks between sets.
Benchmark Notes
The primary limiter is sustaining 135 lb thrusters under the compounding EMOM burpee box jump penalty — every minute past the first, athletes must stop and perform a burpee box jump, fragmenting sets and adding fatigue. L5 (~15 min) would break thrusters into sets of 5-7 early, shrinking to singles/doubles late, accumulating roughly 14 burpee box jumps. Elite athletes (L10, ~5 min) cycle thrusters in large unbroken sets and finish before the penalty becomes severe.
Modality Profile
Two movements: Burpee Box Jump is Gymnastics (bodyweight movement combining burpee and box jump), and Thruster is Weightlifting (barbell with external load). 1 G + 1 W = 50/50 split.
