Workout Description

4-3-2-1 reps for time of: Pegboard Squat clean + front squat Women: 145, 165, 185, 205 lb Men: 235, 265, 285, 305 lb

Why This Workout Is Extremely Hard

For the average CrossFit athlete, Climbing Couplet is Extremely Hard because 10 pegboard ascents are paired with clean-plus-front-squat complexes that climb from 235/145 to 305/205 lb. High-skill pulling taxes grip and trunk control before each increasingly heavy barbell, and the final load approaches a maximum for many strong athletes. The combination of elite gymnastics, maximal late loading, and uninterrupted time pressure makes the Rx workout realistically elite-only.

Training Focus

This workout develops the following fitness attributes:

  • Strength (9/10): The clean-plus-front-squat complex climbs to 305/205 lb after prior work, placing near-maximal force production at the decisive end of the workout.
  • Power (6/10): Each heavy squat clean demands explosive extension and fast turnover, although the pegboard and front squat add slower strength components.
  • Stamina (5/10): Ten pegboard ascents and 20 loaded squat-pattern repetitions require meaningful grip, pulling, trunk, and leg stamina despite the relatively low rep count.
  • Speed (5/10): Fast transitions matter, but successful pegboard execution and secure heavy singles reward controlled efficiency more than all-out cycling speed. The score still rewards purposeful transitions and a cadence matched to the intended duration.
  • Endurance (3/10): The five-to-twelve-minute effort raises breathing, but skill failure and heavy force production limit performance before pure aerobic capacity does. Breathing control still determines how consistently the athlete can execute the full prescription.
  • Flexibility (3/10): Secure pegboard positions and increasingly heavy front squats require adequate shoulder, wrist, thoracic, hip, and ankle mobility under fatigue. Adequate mobility supports safe standards and efficient positions throughout the complete workout.

  • Front Squat

Scaling Options

Replace pegboard ascents with rope climbs, seated rope pulls, or strict pulling of comparable duration, and reduce each barbell step while preserving the four-round ascending-load structure.

Scaling Explanation

Scale if pegboard attempts exceed roughly 30-40 seconds or any prescribed bar exceeds a reliable heavy single. Preserve the interaction between difficult pulling and progressively heavier squat strength in a 5-12 minute effort.

Intended Stimulus

A high-skill, high-strength 5-12 minute test. Athletes must manage pegboard grip and breathing so they can execute increasingly heavy clean-plus-front-squat complexes without misses at the decisive final bar.

Coach Insight

Use efficient, repeatable pegboard pulls and come down before grip fails. Treat the barbell as deliberate singles, brace before the clean, stand fully, reset the front rack, and avoid rushing the final 285-305-lb complexes.

Benchmark Notes

Pegboard capacity followed immediately by increasingly heavy clean-plus-front-squat complexes is the limiter. L5 is 12:00 with deliberate pegboard rests and singles at 285-305 lb; L10 is 5:00, requiring roughly 20 seconds per ascent, 8 seconds per barbell complex, and almost no transition loss.

Modality Profile

Counting each unique movement once per modalityPrompt.ts, Pegboard Ascent is gymnastics while Squat Clean and Front Squat are weightlifting, producing G 30%, M 0%, and W 70%.
