Workout Description
For Time
20 Squat Cleans (135/95 lb)
2000 meter Row
20 Clean-and-Jerks (135/95 lb)
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This workout stacks three brutal elements sequentially: 20 squat cleans (technical, leg-intensive) into a 2000m row (cardiovascular crusher that destroys the legs further), then 20 clean-and-jerks on already-fatigued legs and lungs. The squat cleans pre-fatigue the posterior chain and quads, making the row miserable, and the clean-and-jerks arrive when athletes are most depleted. Total volume, load, and cumulative fatigue across all three elements push this well beyond Hard.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (8/10): Forty total cleans and jerks at a moderate load require significant muscular endurance in the posterior chain, legs, and shoulders, compounded by the rowing fatigue accumulated mid-workout.
- Endurance (7/10): The 2000m row is a significant aerobic challenge, and combined with 40 total barbell cycling reps, this workout demands sustained cardiovascular output over a moderate-to-long duration.
- Power (7/10): Both squat cleans and clean-and-jerks are inherently explosive movements requiring triple extension. Maintaining power output across 40 reps under fatigue is a primary challenge of this workout.
- Flexibility (6/10): Squat cleans require deep hip and ankle mobility to receive the bar in a full squat. Clean-and-jerks demand thoracic extension and overhead stability, making mobility a meaningful factor.
- Strength (5/10): 135/95 lb is a moderate load that demands real strength, especially under fatigue. Not maximal effort, but heavy enough to force strategic breaking of sets throughout the workout.
- Speed (5/10): Pacing the row and managing barbell cycling speed are critical. Athletes must balance efficient bar cycling with enough recovery to sustain output across all three segments without burning out early.

Scaling Options
Weight: Scale to 95/65 lb for intermediate athletes, or 75/55 lb for newer athletes — the barbell should feel challenging but allow sets of 3-5 reps when fresh. Movement substitution: Replace squat cleans with power cleans if squat mechanics are compromised under fatigue. Replace clean-and-jerks with power clean + push press if the jerk is not yet trained. Row substitution: 1600m row, 2000m ski erg, or 100 calories on the assault bike. Volume modification: Reduce barbell reps to 15 each (15 squat cleans / 2000m row / 15 clean-and-jerks) or 10 each for athletes newer to barbell cycling.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the weight if you cannot perform at least 5 unbroken squat cleans at Rx weight when fresh, or if your squat clean technique breaks down significantly under fatigue — rounded back and forward collapse are red flags. Scale to power cleans if you lack the squat mobility or confidence to safely receive the bar in the hole when tired. The goal is to finish in 18-30 minutes; if you are projected to go beyond 35 minutes, reduce reps or weight to preserve the intended stimulus. Prioritize technique over load — a heavy barbell with poor mechanics across 40 reps is a recipe for injury. Intensity is secondary to moving well on this one.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-to-long time domain grinder, targeting roughly 18-30 minutes of sustained work. The workout demands a hard, sustained effort — think diesel engine, not a sports car. The primary challenge is a brutal combination of barbell cycling skill and conditioning, with the 2000m row acting as a separator between two demanding barbell movements. Expect significant metabolic fatigue, grip breakdown, and lower back accumulation. The training effect is building mental and physical resilience under load over an extended effort.
Coach Insight
Strategy is everything here. The squat cleans will feel manageable early — resist the urge to go unbroken. Break them into sets of 4-5 from the start, resting 10-15 seconds between sets to protect your lower back and grip for what comes after. On the row, settle into a pace you can sustain — aim for a 500m split that is 5-8 seconds slower than your 2k PR pace. Do NOT sprint the row; you still have 20 clean-and-jerks waiting. For the clean-and-jerks, the jerk is your friend — use it to save your legs. Push jerk or split jerk aggressively so your legs do the work, not your arms. Break into sets of 3-5 with short, deliberate rest. Key technique cues: keep the bar close on every pull, use your hips, and reset your breath before each rep. Common mistakes: going too hard on the squat cleans, sprinting the row and dying on the clean-and-jerks, and letting the clean-and-jerk devolve into a push press out of fatigue.
Benchmark Notes
20 squat cleans, a 2,000 m row and 20 clean-and-jerks at 135/95 lb. The row is about 60% of the time. L5 (12:55-14:15) rows near 8:00 and takes the lifts in small sets. L10 (under 9 min) rows near 6:45 and touch-and-goes the barbell.
Modality Profile
3 movements total: Row (M), Squat Clean (W), Clean and Jerk (W). 1 monostructural and 2 weightlifting movements. M: 1/3 ≈ 33%, W: 2/3 ≈ 67%, G: 0%.
