Workout Description
AMRAP in 35 minutes
400 meter Run
9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Deadlifts (bodyweight)
200 ft Walking Lunges
8 Burpees over the Bar
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This 35-minute AMRAP combines four consecutive leg-dominant movements with no built-in recovery. The descending deadlift ladder (9-8-7...1 = 45 reps per round at bodyweight) accumulates massive posterior chain fatigue, compounded by 400m runs and 200ft walking lunges hammering the same muscles. Burpees over the bar add cardiovascular demand when already gassed. The extended time domain ensures deep cumulative fatigue, pushing this well beyond Hard.
Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): The descending deadlift ladder totals 45 reps per round, combined with 200ft lunges and 8 burpees, creates enormous muscular endurance demands across the posterior chain, legs, and full body over 35 minutes.
- Endurance (9/10): A 35-minute AMRAP with repeated 400m runs creates sustained cardiovascular demand throughout. The aerobic system is heavily taxed as athletes cycle through running and ground-based movements continuously.
- Strength (5/10): Bodyweight deadlifts represent a moderate load, challenging enough to fatigue the posterior chain but not a true maximal strength stimulus. Repeated sets under fatigue elevate the strength demand meaningfully.
- Speed (5/10): Efficient transitions and steady pacing are critical in a 35-minute AMRAP. Athletes must manage effort across runs and ground movements, balancing speed with sustainability to maximize total rounds completed.
- Flexibility (4/10): Walking lunges require hip flexor mobility and ankle flexibility. Deadlifts demand hamstring length and hip hinge mechanics. Burpees require thoracic extension. Moderate overall mobility demands across multiple planes.
- Power (3/10): Burpees over the bar require a small explosive jump component, but the workout is primarily a grind. Deadlifts at bodyweight are not performed explosively under this fatigue context, limiting power expression.

Scaling Options
Weight: Reduce deadlift load to 60-70% of bodyweight if true bodyweight feels heavy or technique breaks down — prioritize a flat back over the prescribed load. Movement substitutions: Replace the 400m run with a 500m row or 2-minute bike if running is limited by injury. Sub box step-ups (20 reps) for walking lunges if knee pain or balance is an issue. Replace burpees over the bar with lateral step-overs or standard burpees if jumping over the bar feels unsafe under fatigue. Volume: Reduce the run to 200m per round, cut lunges to 100 ft, or reduce burpees to 5 per round to keep total work time within the 35-minute window. Time cap: If 35 minutes is too long, scale to a 25-minute AMRAP with the above volume reductions.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the deadlift weight if you cannot perform at least 6 unbroken reps at bodyweight with a neutral spine and proper hip hinge — form breakdown under fatigue in a 35-minute workout is a recipe for injury. Scale volume if you estimate you would complete fewer than 3 full rounds, as the intended stimulus requires enough rounds to feel the descending rep scheme pay off mentally and physically. Prioritize movement quality and sustained intensity over hitting Rx numbers. The goal is to keep moving consistently for the full 35 minutes — athletes should finish feeling like they worked hard but could have pushed slightly more, not completely gassed after round two. If you are newer to CrossFit or returning from a break, scaling is the smart play to build the aerobic base this workout is designed to develop.
Intended Stimulus
This is a long-duration aerobic grind targeting your engine and mental toughness over 35 minutes. The descending deadlift rep scheme (9 down to 1) gives you a psychological carrot to chase each round while the run, lunges, and burpees keep your heart rate elevated throughout. Expect a sustained, moderate-to-hard effort — think long steady engine with moments of heavier breathing on the run and burpees. The primary challenge is mental: staying composed and consistent when fatigue accumulates across multiple rounds. The adaptation here is aerobic capacity, muscular endurance, and the ability to manage effort over an extended time domain.
Coach Insight
The biggest mistake athletes make here is going out too hot on the first run and the opening set of 9 deadlifts. Treat the first two rounds as a warm-up — you should feel like you're holding back. Your pacing goal is to finish each round in roughly the same time from start to finish. On the deadlifts, bodyweight loads should be manageable but not trivial — brace your core hard, hinge at the hips, and keep the bar close to your body. As reps decrease each round, resist the urge to rush; use the lower rep counts as active recovery. For the 200 ft walking lunges, stay tall, drive through your front heel, and keep your torso upright — don't let fatigue collapse your posture. On burpees over the bar, step up and step back if needed to conserve energy; the jump is optional. Transitions between movements are free speed — move with purpose but don't sprint between stations. Break deadlifts early if needed: on the round of 9, consider 5-4 or 3-3-3 rather than grinding a tough set to failure.
Benchmark Notes
Each round is a 400 m run, bodyweight deadlifts falling from 9 to 1 round by round, 200 ft of walking lunges and 8 bar-over burpees. L5 (5.6-6.5 rounds) takes about 5:30 a round. Elite athletes hold about 3:05 a round (11.25+ in 35 minutes).
Modality Profile
4 movements: Run (M), Deadlift (W), Walking Lunge (G - bodyweight), Burpee Over Bar (G - bodyweight). G=2, M=1, W=1. Percentages: G=50%, M=25%, W=25%.
