Workout Description

For time: 100 Back Squats 100 Bench Presses 100 Deadlifts 1 Mile Run Use 100% of your bodyweight for all three lifts. Complete all 100 reps at each station before moving on. Do not partition the work. The clock runs through every rest and transition. Created by David Winne (@winnesworld).

Why This Workout Is Extremely Hard

The Rx version requires 300 barbell reps at the athlete's bodyweight plus a mile. The fixed order concentrates fatigue in one movement at a time, and all rests and transitions remain on the clock. One hundred bodyweight bench presses are a severe limiter even for strong athletes.

Benchmark Times for The 301 Test

  • Elite: <40:00
  • Advanced: 45:00-50:00
  • Intermediate: 55:00-60:00
  • Beginner: >90:00

Training Focus

This workout develops the following fitness attributes:

  • Stamina (10/10): Finishing all 100 reps of each lift before advancing tests whether the athlete can maintain local muscular output without failed reps.
  • Strength (9/10): Each barbell movement uses the athlete's bodyweight. Relative strength, especially in the bench press, determines whether the Rx version is sustainable.
  • Endurance (6/10): The mile follows 300 loaded reps, so aerobic pacing and recovery between sets materially affect the final time.
  • Speed (3/10): Transitions stay on the clock, but rushing sets raises the cost of failure. Steady breaks matter more than sprint cycling.
  • Flexibility (2/10): The workout uses standard squat, bench, hinge, and running ranges. Mobility supports safe positions but is not the main separator.
  • Power (2/10): No movement requires a maximal explosive effort. Repeatable force and position matter more than peak bar speed.

Movements

  • Back Squat
  • Bench Press
  • Deadlift
  • Run

Scaling Options

Use 75% or 50% of bodyweight for all three lifts. Keep the order and complete 100 reps at each station.

Scaling Explanation

Using the same percentage for every lift preserves the ordered strength-endurance test while reducing failed reps and long breaks.

Intended Stimulus

A long, unpartitioned strength-endurance test followed by a fatigued mile. Use small repeatable sets, keep breaks short, and stay well clear of bench-press failure.

Coach Insight

Plan around the bench press, the likely bottleneck. Start with smaller sets than you expect, use rack safeties or a reliable spotter, and keep a steady rhythm through the deadlifts before starting the mile under control.

Benchmark Notes

Published full-bodyweight finishes span 57:00 to 1:28:40, and the creator recommends finishing under 60 minutes while naming sub-50 as the next target. The curve anchors its slower end around 90:00, its middle at 60:00, and advanced levels at 50:00 and faster. Female thresholds add 10% for the bodyweight bench press, matching the catalog's Light Linda adjustment.

Modality Profile

Three of the four movements use a barbell, and the final mile is monostructural work, producing a 75% weightlifting and 25% monostructural profile.
