Workout Description
For Time
50 Clean-and-Jerks (135/95 lb)
50 Burpees
800 meter Run
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This workout combines three brutal elements sequentially with no built-in rest. 50 clean-and-jerks at 135/95 lb is already nearly double Grace's volume — a benchmark rated Hard on its own. Arriving at 50 burpees with a fatigued posterior chain and grip is punishing, and the 800m run finishes an already-depleted athlete. Multiple limiting factors (grip, lungs, legs, skill) compound across all three movements.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): Fifty clean-and-jerks and fifty burpees represent extremely high volume for demanding movements. Grip, posterior chain, and full-body muscular endurance are severely taxed before the run even begins.
- Endurance (7/10): The 800m run combined with 50 burpees and 50 clean-and-jerks creates sustained cardiovascular demand. Heart rate stays elevated throughout, making aerobic capacity a primary limiting factor for completion time.
- Power (7/10): Clean-and-jerks are inherently explosive movements requiring hip drive and fast elbows. Maintaining power output across 50 reps is a key challenge, though fatigue progressively degrades explosiveness.
- Speed (6/10): For Time format incentivizes fast cycling of clean-and-jerks and burpees. Efficient transitions and maintaining rep pace under fatigue are critical to a competitive finish time.
- Strength (5/10): 135/95 lb clean-and-jerks require meaningful strength, but the high rep count shifts the stimulus away from maximal force production toward muscular endurance at a moderate-to-heavy load.
- Flexibility (5/10): Clean-and-jerks demand overhead mobility, hip flexibility, and thoracic extension. Burpees require hip flexor and shoulder range of motion. Moderate but consistent mobility demands throughout the workout.
Scaling Options
Weight: Scale clean-and-jerk to 95/65 lb (70% of Rx) or 75/55 lb (55%) for athletes newer to the movement. Movement substitution: Sub dumbbell hang clean-and-jerks (35-50/20-35 lb) if barbell cycling is a limiting skill. For burpees, sub no-push-up burpees (squat thrust style) or reduce to 35 reps if volume is prohibitive. Volume: Scale to 35 clean-and-jerks and 35 burpees, or reduce to 25/25 for newer athletes. Run: Sub 600m or 400m if running is a significant limiter, or row 1000m as an equivalent.
Scaling Explanation
Scale the weight if you cannot perform at least 10 unbroken clean-and-jerks at Rx load when fresh — cycling 50 reps requires efficiency, and grinding through heavy singles will push this workout well past 35 minutes and risk injury. Scale volume if you're newer to high-rep barbell work or if your technique degrades significantly under fatigue. The goal is to keep moving with purpose throughout — if you're stopping for more than 20-30 seconds at a time repeatedly, the load or volume is too high. Prioritize technique on the clean-and-jerk above all else; a sloppy jerk under fatigue is a shoulder injury waiting to happen. Target completion time is 18-28 minutes for most athletes at an appropriate scaling level.
Intended Stimulus
This is a moderate-to-long time domain grinder targeting 18-30 minutes of sustained effort. The workout demands a hard, sustained engine — think diesel, not rocket fuel. The primary challenge is mental and conditioning-based: the clean-and-jerks will tax your shoulders and grip early, the burpees will crush your lungs and legs, and the 800m run is the final gut-check when you're already cooked. Expect significant lactate accumulation and a serious test of your ability to keep moving when everything in you wants to stop.
Coach Insight
Strategy is everything here. On the 50 clean-and-jerks, resist the urge to go unbroken early — that's a trap. Start with sets of 5-7, rest 10-15 seconds between sets, and keep the bar moving with a consistent rhythm. Use a power clean and push jerk to conserve energy over a full squat clean and split jerk. For the burpees, find a sustainable pace from rep one — a slow, steady burpee beats a fast start and a crash. Step up, step back if needed; just keep moving. Don't sprint the first 400m of the run — settle into a strong, controlled pace and open up the last 200m if you have anything left. Common mistakes: going too heavy on the bar and burning out by rep 20, doing burpees too fast and dying on the run, and treating the run as a cooldown instead of a scored portion. Transitions between movements should be immediate — no standing around.
Benchmark Notes
50 clean-and-jerks at 135/95 lb, 50 burpees and an 800 m run. L5 (13:10-15:05) takes the lifts as quick singles and doubles. L10 (under 7:45) cycles them at Grace pace.
Modality Profile
Three unique movements: Clean and Jerk (Weightlifting), Burpee (Gymnastics), Run (Monostructural). Each modality gets approximately 33% with Weightlifting rounded up to 34%.
