Workout Description
For Time (with a Partner):
9 Rope Climbs* (total) (15 ft)
11 Wall Climb* (each)
20 Dumbbell Burpee Box Step Overs* (each) (2x50/35 lb, 24/20")
1 mile Dumbbell Run (together) (50/35 lbs)
*For the first three movements, one partner works at a time, while the other partner maintains a Hollow Hold position.
Why This Workout Is Very Hard
This partner workout combines multiple high-skill, high-demand movements with a brutal twist: the resting partner must maintain a Hollow Hold, turning recovery into active work. Rope climbs, wall climbs, and loaded burpee box step-overs each tax grip, shoulders, and legs. The mile dumbbell run (50/35 lbs) as a finisher is a brutal capstone. Cumulative fatigue across all four movements with no true rest makes this Very Hard.

Training Focus
This workout develops the following fitness attributes:
- Stamina (9/10): Rope climbs, wall climbs, burpee box step overs, and a loaded run accumulate massive muscular endurance demands across upper body pulling, pushing, and legs. The hollow hold penalty adds constant core fatigue.
- Endurance (7/10): The 1-mile dumbbell run combined with sustained partner work creates significant cardiovascular demand. The continuous nature of alternating movements with hollow holds keeps heart rate elevated throughout the workout.
- Strength (5/10): Rope climbs require significant pulling strength, and carrying 50/35 lb dumbbells for a mile adds meaningful load. However, movements are endurance-focused rather than maximal strength efforts.
- Speed (5/10): For Time format incentivizes efficient transitions and pacing, but the hollow hold penalty and heavy dumbbell run naturally moderate cycling speed. Strategic partner pacing is critical to managing fatigue.
- Flexibility (4/10): Wall climbs require shoulder and thoracic mobility, rope climbs demand hip flexor and lat flexibility, and burpee box step overs need hip mobility. Moderate overall range of motion demands throughout.
- Power (3/10): Burpee box step overs have a minor explosive component, but the workout is predominantly a grind. The loaded run and climbing movements favor sustained output over explosive power generation.

Scaling Options
Rope Climbs: Scale to 3-5 rope climbs total using a foot-assisted or seated rope pull variation, or substitute 3 strict pull-ups per rope climb (27-45 total, split between partners). Wall Climbs: Reduce to 6-8 each, or substitute inchworms with a push-up (same rep count) or pike push-up progressions. Dumbbell Burpee Box Step Overs: Reduce weight to 2x35/20 lbs or 2x25/15 lbs; lower box height to 20/16 inches; reduce reps to 12-15 each; remove the dumbbell entirely and perform bodyweight burpee box step overs. Dumbbell Run: Reduce to a 800m run, lower the load to 35/20 lbs per hand, or substitute a 1-mile farmer carry walk if running with load is unsafe. Hollow Hold: Scale to a bent-knee hollow hold or a plank hold for athletes who cannot maintain a rigid hollow position for extended periods.
Scaling Explanation
Scale rope climbs if an athlete cannot perform at least 2 unbroken rope climbs with good technique — grip failure on rope climbs is a safety concern and will derail the entire workout. Scale wall climbs if an athlete cannot complete 3 unbroken wall climbs; the volume of 11 each is significant and poor technique under fatigue increases shoulder and wrist injury risk. Scale the dumbbell weight on burpee box step overs if the athlete cannot maintain a controlled step-over (no jumping off the box) for at least 8 reps unbroken at Rx load. Scale the run distance or load if the athlete has shoulder, elbow, or grip limitations that make a loaded mile unsafe. The priority in this workout is sustaining quality movement under fatigue and keeping the hollow hold honest — intensity is secondary to technique and partner communication. Target completion time is 30-50 minutes; if a team is projected to exceed 55 minutes, reduce volume across all movements to preserve the intended stimulus.
Intended Stimulus
This is a long, grinding partner workout designed to test muscular endurance, grip stamina, and mental toughness over a moderate-to-long time domain — expect 30 to 50 minutes for most teams. The hollow hold penalty mechanic is the defining feature: every second your partner is working, you are actively suffering in a static hold. This creates a shared accountability loop that demands communication, pacing, and trust. The energy demand is a sustained, hard aerobic effort with repeated high-skill and high-tension movements. The primary challenges are grip endurance across rope climbs and the dumbbell run, core fatigue from constant hollow holds, and the mental grind of staying composed when your body wants to quit.
Coach Insight
The hollow hold mechanic is the engine that drives your strategy — never let your partner fail their hold, because a broken hollow hold means wasted energy and lost time. Start conservative on rope climbs: singles or doubles with full rest for your partner to reset their hollow hold position. For wall climbs, break them into small sets of 2-3 early and stay disciplined — 11 reps each is a lot when your core is already taxed from holding. On dumbbell burpee box step overs, move at a pace you can sustain for all 20 reps without stopping; these will feel heavier than expected because of accumulated fatigue. Communicate constantly — call out when you're about to come off the rope or wall so your partner can prepare to hold. The mile dumbbell run is done together, so find a shared pace and commit to it; consider farmer carry style and switch hands frequently to manage grip. Biggest mistakes: going too fast on rope climbs and burning out grip early, letting hollow holds get sloppy (hips dropping, arms bending), and underestimating how heavy the dumbbells feel on the run after everything else.
Benchmark Notes
Partner workout: 9 shared rope climbs, 11 wall walks each and 20 dumbbell burpee box step-overs each (2x50/35 lb, 24/20 in), one partner working while the other holds a hollow hold, then a mile run together carrying a dumbbell. L5 (26:30-29:30) takes about 17 minutes for the gymnastics and 11 for the run. An elite team finishes under 17 minutes.
